In de zomer van 2013 is de Scheveningse rockband Suburbs aan een tweede leven begonnen. Suburbs maakt stevige en sferische rock met engelstalige teksten die gaan over het leven naast de zee. De band heeft z’n roots in de jaren 90 en kreeg landelijke bekendheid door het winnen van De Grote Prijs van Nederland. In de jaren daarna bracht de band 3 albums uit en werd er getourd in het festival-en clubcircuit.
De nieuwe Suburbs bracht in 2017 de EP Playing With Old Toys (5 tracks) uit en in 2019 het album The Sound Of The Sea (8 tracks). Beide releases kregen (inter)nationaal lovende kritieken.Samen met Huibert de Jong (video-production) heeft Suburbs inmiddels 6 singles/clips uitgebracht, waarin beeld, muziek en tekst op unieke wijze samenkomen. De single/clip Resolutions (januari 2021) stond 2 weken op nummer 1 in de Indie Chart (top 40 alternatieve muziek) en kwam op 9 in de Free 40 Chart (onafhankelijke releases).
Nieuwe songs en opnames zijn in ontwikkeling.
Uitgebreide geschiedenis en discografie
1995-2002
Na het uitbrengen van het mini-album "Disturbed" (1995) werd Suburbs een begrip en na veel optredens had de band een sterke live-reputatie verworven. Het winnen van de Grote Prijs Van Nederland in 1997 gaf de band landelijke bekendheid en de jaren daarna trad de band door heel Nederland op in het club-en festivalcircuit. De diverse radio- en TV optredens en de optredens eind jaren 90 op Parkpop en Crossing Border hebben daar eveneens toe bijgedragen. Vooral in de regio Den Haag werd Suburbs een van de toonaangevende bands en was een voorbeeld voor enkele daarna in Nederland doorgebroken Haagse bands. Meerdere singles zijn uitgebracht waarvan de meesten redelijk wat airplay op radio 3 hebben gekregen en een single die gecoverd is door Di-rect. De albums "New Buildings" (november 1997) en "Land of the Lunatics (juni 1999) werden opgenomen in Bulletsound en uitgebracht door platenlabel Red Bullet (Willem van Kooten). De singles "Forever", "Dancing in the air" en "Timemachine werden (bescheiden) hits in Nederland. Vooral "Forever" kreeg veel airplay op Radio 3. De single "Citylights" is vooral een regionale hit geweest en is door menigeen uitgeroepen tot een van de beste liedjes uit Den Haag. Het nummer "Rollercoaster" werd in 2004 door de Haagse band Di-rect een hit gemaakt. In 2002 besloten de bandleden tijdelijk te stoppen met de band. Ieder ging zijn eigen muzikale weg.
2005-2010
In 2005 kwam Suburbs weer bij elkaar voor een optreden voor het Koninklijk huis tijdens hun bezoek aan Scheveningen. Daarna besloot de band weer te gaan werken aan nieuwe nummers en te gaan optreden in een nieuwe bezetting. In november 2007 zijn Suburbs in Liverpool geweest voor een clubtour. In 2008 ging de band de studio in om het 4e album op te nemen. Het album "What you gonna do about it?" werd in januari 2009 uitgebracht in eigen beheer. De bekende striptekenaar Romano Molenaar (o.a. Storm) tekende de hoes, waardoor het album voor verzamelaars een collectors-item is geworden. Het album werd goed ontvangen en de recensies waren lovend (o.a.Oor) en Suburbs gaf een legendarisch optreden op Schollenpop 2009. Echter, de band werd opnieuw geplaagd door bandwisselingen en begin 2010 werd het opnieuw stil rond Suburbs.
2013-2021
In 2013 is er nieuw leven geblazen in Suburbs met de terugkomst van gitarist Jack de Graaf uit de pre-Suburbs tijd. Er werden 5 songs uit de begindagen opnieuw gearrangeerd en opgenomen in Basement Studio. In 2017 zijn deze uitgebracht op het mini-album: PLAYING WITH OLD TOYS.
Het gelijknamig nummer werd uitgebracht als single/clip. Daarnaast werden alle eerder uitgebrachte albums en singles verzameld en op streamingsdiensten geplaatst. Maar de band wilde verder en het doel werd gesteld om het beste Suburbs album ooit te maken in Basement Studio o.l.v. Ernst van Wageningen als engineer.
De samenwerking werd aangegaan met de video producent Huibert de Jong voor passende video-clips die de sfeer van de muziek en betekenis van de teksten hebben versterkt en onderstreept. Bij het creatieve proces en opnamens werden geen concessies gedaan door tijdsdruk of middelen. Alleen datgene waar de band zelf volledig achter stond zou worden uitgebracht. Dit heeft geresulteerd tot het album THE SOUND OF THE SEA met 8 nieuwe songs, waarvan er 5 zijn uitgebracht als single met videoclip (zie pagina CLIPS).
In 2018 heeft Suburbs een Nederlandse vertaling van het nummer The Sound Of The Sea uitgebracht als een eerbetoon aan home-town Scheveningen. De langverwachte album-release was in augustus 2019. Suburbs maakte alle verwachtingen waar met een knallend optreden op Schollenpop. Het eerste exemplaar van het album THE SOUND OF THE SEA werd uitgereikt aan gastzanger Tim Akkerman. Het nieuwe album werd zowel nationaal als internationaal zeer goed ontvangen.

English version
In the summer of 2013, rockband Suburbs started a new chapter. Suburbs makes solid and atmospheric rock with English lyrics about life next to the sea. The band has its roots in the 80s and 90s. National exposure was achieved in the late nineties when the band won the national contest "De grote Prijs van Nederland" ("The Big Price of The Netherlands").
The EP Playing With Old Toys in 2017 (5 tracks) and the album The Sound Of The Sea in 2019 (8 tracks) received rave reviews (inter) nationally.
Suburbs is working on new songs and recordings.
Together with Huibert de Jong (video production) Suburbs has now released 6 singles/clips in which image, music and text come together in a unique way.
Detailed history and discography
1995-2002
After releasing the mini-album "Disturbed" (1995) Suburbs became known and many performance gave the band a strong live reputation. Winning "De Grote Prijs Van Nederland" (The Big Price of the Netherlands" in 1997 gave the band nattional exposure and in the years after many perfromance were given at various stages, clubs and festivals througout The Netherlands. Miscellaneous radio and TV shows as well as performances at Parkpop and Crossing Border in the late nineties contributed to that reputation. Especially in and around The Hague, Suburbs were seen as (and still is) a renown band and set the stage for many bands to follow, some of which are now Dutch topbands (Di-rect a.o). One of the first hits from Di-rect was covered from Suburbs (Rollercoaster). Ever since, multiple singles have been released with coverage on national radio stations. Albums as "New Buildings" (November 1997) and "Land of the Lunatics (June 1999) were recorded in the Bulletsound Studio and released by record label Red Bullet (Willem van Kooten). Singles as "Forever", "Dancing in the air" and "Timemachine" were (modest) hits in The Netherlands. Especially "Forever" got considerable airplay on National Radio. The single "Citylights" was a regional hit in particular and has been announced by many critics as one of the best best local popsongs. The hit single "Rollercoaster" was covered by Di-rect in 2004. As of 2002 the band came to a mutual agreement to stop their activities and each member to follow his own musical path.
2005-2010
In 2005 Suburbs rejoined for a performance for the Dutch Royal Family during their visit of Scheveningen shortly after which the band decided to start working on new songs and performing with new band members. In november 2007 Suburbs visited Liverpool for a tour in various clubs. In 2008 the band recorded their 4th album "What you gonna do about it?" which was released on a private label The renown Dutch cartoonist Romano Molenaar (Storm a.o.) made the graphic design of the album which made the album a collectors item . The album was received well and good critics were published in Music Magazines (Oor). Suburbs had a legendary performance at teh Beach festival Schollenpop in 2009. Despite the successes the band decided to split up as a result of many changes.
2013-2021
Suburbs was revived in 2013 with the return of guitarist Jack de Graaf from the pre-Suburbs era. 5 songs from the early days were re-arranged and recorded in Basement Studio. In 2017 these were released on the mini-album: PLAYING WITH OLD TOYS. The song of the same name was released as a single / clip. In addition, all previously released albums and singles were collected and placed on streaming services. But the band wanted to go further and the goal was set to make the best Suburbs album ever in Basement Studio under the direction of Ernst van Wageningen as an engineer.There also started a collaboration with the video producer Huibert de Jong for appropriate video clips that have enhanced and underlined the atmosphere of the music and the meaning of the lyrics. No concessions were made in the creative process and recordings due to time constraints or resources. Only what the band fully supported themselves would be released. This has resulted in the album THE SOUND OF THE SEA with 8 new songs, 5 of which have been released as a single with video clip (see page CLIPS).In 2018 Suburbs released a Dutch translation of the song The Sound Of The Sea as a tribute to home-town Scheveningen. The long-awaited album release was in August 2019. Suburbs lived up to all expectations with a smashing performance at Schollenpop. The first copy of the album THE SOUND OF THE SEA was presented to guest singer Tim Akkerman. The new album was very well received both nationally and internationally.
